Building a collection is a key element of music-related engagement. If users have a collection then they invested time in creating playlists, liking, and organizing their favorite music. This adds stickiness and lets users come back to the app. An existing collection makes it more difficult to change the music app, but if building the collection is not easy on the platform fewer users will experience this effect.

Summary

In total, we conducted 4 in-depth interviews with SoundCloud users, 9 unmoderated sessions and got 1,348 open-ended survey responses on what people typically expect in a music library and how users think the SoundCloud library could be improved. The findings show that users would like to have better organization and categorization of their music library, specifically flexible filtering and sorting on all library pages. They would appreciate easier and faster access to favorite music and recommendations within the library, as well as better and more listening insights.

Solution

In the Library management project primarily we wanted to provide an effortless way to manage and re-consume users’ favorite music and to fill the gaps in the experience. Later considering all other findings we want to revamp the UX with a new information architecture.

We were focusing on the missing key features: to get control over your collection, to customize the library experience - add the search bar and the filter button to each page in the library, more options for context-sensitive sorting and filtering in the library, for example, sorting by artist or title, or filtering by downloaded content, also to improve empty states that currently do not provide relevant information.
